【Ashinuma Stone Quarry and the persimmon glaze used for Mashiko Pottery】

The Ashinuma Stone Quarry produces Ashinuma stone, a kind of tuff used as a raw material for Persimmon Glaze. Ashinuma stone had been widely used since olden times as a construction material. Around the mid-1850s, Seizo Kikuchi, a local potter in Mashiko, found that Ashinuma stone could be a good raw material for making glazes, and thereafter the use of Ashinuma stone in glazes increased. Persimmon Glaze can be made using Ashinuma stone by itself. Black Glaze can also be made by simply adding wood ashes to Persimmon Glaze. Ashinuma stone became an indispensable raw glaze material for finishing Mashiko Pottery. Persimmon Glaze is a kind of iron glaze and is dark brown in color.
