The former Hamada Shoji residence’s main building

Japan Heritage/Architecture
This building, originally a farmhouse built in the late Edo period (1603 - 1868), was bought by the potter Shoji Hamada. He relocated the building to use it as his home as well as a workshop. The building was also used as a meeting place for visitors from home and abroad. In 1989, this building was designated a tangible cultural property by Mashiko town, and moved into the Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko museum for the preservation of Mashiko Pottery tradition.
