Wooden statue of the bodhisattva Maitreya

Japan Heritage/Folkcraft Product
This wooden statue of the bodhisattva Maitreya in a standing position was created in 1247. The sculptor is unknown, but it is thought that he is someone descended from the tradition of Unkei, a famous sculptor of the Kei School of Buddhist sculpture, which flourished in the Kamakura period (1192 - 1333). This image is typical of the era when both the Sung dynasty style and the Kei school sculpture style were established. It was made at the express wish of Tokitomo Kasama. This wooden standing statue has been designated an important cultural property by the Japanese government.
