The Mashiko Sankokan Museum's climbing kilns

Japan Heritage/Museum
The Mashiko Sankokan Museum has two climbing kilns. One is a salt-firing kiln used exclusively for firing ceramic-ware with salt glaze applied. This is a type of glaze preferred by Shoji Hamada. The other was destroyed in the Great East Japan earthquake that occurred in 2011, but it was reconstructed in 2015. Since then, a pottery-firing event has been held every three years as the "Project for Resurrecting Shoji Hamada's Climbing Kilns", in the hope of strengthening the ties of potters in Kasama and Mashiko. One of the two kilns has been designated a tangible cultural property by Mashiko town.
