】Ryōgon-ji Temple (Wooden statue of the Thousand-armed Kannon, in a standing position)】

The Ryōgon-ji is a temple of the Myōshin-ji School of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. It is the ancestral temple of the Kasama clan, founded by Kasama Tokitomo, a military commander in the Kamakura period (1185 - 1333). Kasama Tokitomo was a relative of the Utsunomiya clan. The temple has a wooden standing statue of the Thousand-armed Kannon, with Tokitomo’s inscription carved within it. The front gate was erected in 1374 during the Muromachi period (1336 - 1573) by Daisetsu Sonou, a Japanese priest of the Rinzai Sect of Buddhism who learned Rinzai Zen in China. Constructed in the four-legged Zen style with a grass-thatched gabled roof, it is a simple yet excellently-designed gate. The Japanese government has designated the wooden standing statue of the Thousand-armed Kannon and the front gate important cultural properties.
