Kneading bowl in black glaze
This kneading bowl has green glaze patterns flowing inside it to make interesting streaks. With patterns on the edge, it demonstrates the strong desire impelling craftsmen in the Edo period (1603-1868) to make excellent ceramics. This bowl is in the possession of Fukuda Kiln, a pottery studio based in Kasama City, with a long and illustrious history. Fukuda Kiln was founded about 230 years ago (in 1796) by Giemon Fukuda I, who acquired Zenroku Sonobe’s kiln after Giemon arrived from Shigaraki (now Shiga Prefecture).
